One week I was asked to teach trap camp and I had never made a trap before that could be scary for some people, but it kept me on my toes and the coordinators and veteran instructors are always happy to teach skills if you are proactive in seeking them out. It was also very challenging because there wasn't much organization--just a gist of what you had to take care of for the week, and you make up the curriculum to make it happen, however you see fit. Sometimes communication with coordinator was unhelpful or didn't provide a safe space. you'll learn a lot while you're working there however the pay ceiling is very low. Pretty much management, clearly they have grown very fast, and their management style I would say is a Lil gruff, but It is the actual physicalness of the job that was the biggest con for me: Hiking 7-10 miles a day was tough, I had some injuries that made it impossible to continue. but I feel for the guy.. Half are horrible, half are great. Letting kids experience the forest in a safe camp environment is SO important. Our community is ready to answer. I've worked at Trackers Earth for several years now, and each year I return to an accepting and supportive environment of the most engaging, friendly, and exciting coworkers and managers likely on the planet. Its fun and you get to get paid discovering new beautiful places. Great organization, just not enough training. We know that working outdoors is rewarding and hard work. The few interns that will remain were picked at random, and their jobs will change to parking lot duty, on site store or greeting parents (or substitute for these roles). Majority of the work day is outside in forest area, if you are any sort of guide (this job is not for you if you arent an outdoorsy type)
Does Trackers Earth let you work from home? Once Upon a Time this place is really hardcore you might hear some crazy stories I can testify they are probably true. There are few pros but the kids are great and some of the teachers on staff are great and caring people. While we know the work his hard when you are out in the outdoors with youth, we know there are rewarding and amazing experiences that happen for campers and staff. Pay was not good, it was just above minimum wage. This employer has claimed their Employer Profile and is engaged in the Glassdoor community. I love Trackers and what it stands for. Their are no paid holidays and you work them with regular pay. Really cool people to work with, but under the leadership of a person who instills a culture of shame and blame and gross power dynamics. Wonderful, inclusive space to work in. Sometimes that isn't even up to you, it's up to whatever the program "calls for". fun, meaningful, good culture, can learn cool new things, no healthcare, paid lunch with kids only, seasonal, a fun place to work for the summer. We are so glad you got to love your work when you with Trackers. Would definitely return for another job. The camp is whatever you want to make it. Work was challenging but rewarding and manageable on a daily basis. *Opportunity to grow within Trackers from Intern --> Coordinator--->Lead They took great care of everything very well. That is why we have had all of our staff participate in a required safety and quality program prior to starting at camps. The working environment is clearly very very clique-y, and it definitely felt isolating and like you aren't "accepted" by others if you didn't "look" the part, yet at the same time the culture is to NOT really fit in with the rest or look the part.

Management can be kind of crazy/hectic, sometimes it feels like things arent planned completely and are more just thrown together last minute. I worked at Trackers one summer years ago and was kept away for awhile by a full time job. If you love working with kids, and love being outside, then this is it. Top-down support is essentially nonexistent and it is expected that programs be planned/prepped/and run by Summer and Full-time staff on the entry level. Very conflicting. What is the interview process like at Trackers Earth? Community, the kids, activities, learning new skills, Pay, disorganized and unresponsive management, toxic masculinity runs rampant. The owner is a horribly abusive boss and will ask employees to spy on one another (he calls them his "ears") and will go so far as to try to find out information about his employees personal lives that have nothing to do with work. Communication is much better than it used to be but still not amazing. I received no support to improve this situation beyond the acknowledgement that it was not an ideal situation, and for adults on the site to tell me the unhelpful guidance of "don't let the kids mill" about. It's one of the funniest job you'll ever have! Someone who works at Trackers is able to work within one's expertise, but can also learn more about outdoor education and have job advancement opportunities. Some people would be involuntarily out of work for a couple weeks, or put on another team you have no experience with, and that is really hard to acclimate to. Staff were burnt out quickly for low pay. Then the majority of the interns were laid off because of the cost of transportation for the program. My first 3 days at Trackers were chaotic because there were not enough staff on site and as a result I had more kids under my care than anyone could. This is a summer position. Marketing and support from the Oregon location are super weak as well. We appreciate the dedication and commitment Trackers Earth employees give to help campers have the best experience possible. The founder, Tony Deis, is super passionate about the company and can be found on almost every camp day talking to staff at the site, making sure everything is going ok, etc. 88% said no. The training is good in the sense that there is very standardized protocol for how to deal with emergencies and weird situations, however I would have liked getting more skills training specifically related to the things I would be teaching. Days 4 & 5 improved significantly with additional staff on-sight and I began to see this Internship shaping up to the one I thought it could be. No benefits, maybe just discounts to a couple stores. Year round work is hard to get but it's a great company to work for. This company has been doing great things for the youth of the East Bay as far as getting them outside but neglects its own staff more often than not. All in all though, there definitely were many challenges, but the job was fun when working with children (even the really difficult ones), and you get to dress up and create your own character and make up stories, and be a kid again.
